We are the horticulture volunteers at Bicton College.
The Bicton horticulture department has a team of enthusiastic volunteers who help to maintain the gardens that we use for teaching, and are lead under the watchful eye of horticulture lecture, Patrick Welch.
Whilst we have jobs to do, it is a light-hearted and enjoyable morning. The work we tend to do in the garden includes:
- soil cultivation
- planting out
- laying weed proof barriers where necessary
We always have room for more volunteers, and you would be very welcome should you wish to join us !
BictonColl Gardening volunteers - what we do !
Perks of being a volunteer !
Fruit and veg
We get to take home some of the excess fruit and veg as a thank you for tending the gardens, depending on what is currently available, such as potatoes, tomatoes, courgettes, leeks …
We frequently go on gardening related trips – recent visits have included Dartington and Cotehele.
Working in the gardens at Bicton gives us a few lovely hours each week, being outdoors, making a difference to the garden, chatting with other like-minded people, learning new skills, and enjoying the fresh air, and working within the historic walled gardens of what was formerly a lovely country estate !
When and where
The team meets every Friday at the Horticulture department, for 9am, and works through until 12.30pm with a welcome tea break half way through.
Come on over and join us !
